Apply for a short term license plate

Kurzzeitkennzeichen dienen zur Kennzeichnung von Fahrzeugen außerhalb des Zulassungsverfahrens und können für Probe- und Überführungsfahrten genutzt werden.

New regulations for the allocation of short-term number plates as of 01.04.2015

Short-term registration plates will be allocated from 01.04.15 if:

  • the vehicle is known to the registration authority
  • a valid main inspection / safety inspection is proven
  • the applicant has his main residence in Jena or the vehicle to be transferred is located in the registration district of Jena.

Use of short-term license plates

Short-term license plates are issued on demand for one-time, vehicle-bound use for the following purposes:

  • Test drives
  • Transfer journeys

Short-term license plates cannot be issued for vehicles that have already been registered.

Registration period

The registration period always begins on the day the license plate is issued and ends on the day indicated in the yellow field. Short-term license plates are limited to a maximum of 5 days. After the expiry date, vehicles with these plates may no longer be used or parked on public roads.

  • General documents on the vehicle owner (see Downloads)
  • Electronic confirmation of insurance (eVB) approved for short-term registration plates
  • Vehicle documents (registration certificate part I or part II) in the original or as a copy
  • Proof of the valid main inspection or, if applicable, safety inspection (HU/SP) in the original or as a copy
  • Proof of vehicle location (e.g. purchase contract, invoice)

For persons without residence in Germany, it is possible to apply for export license plates.

Short-term license plates are only valid within Germany.

For vehicles without a valid HU or SP, journeys to carry out the HU/SP may also be made in the registration district of Jena.

For vehicles without a valid operating permit (BE), journeys in connection with obtaining the BE may be made in the district of the registration office or in a neighbouring registration district.

The registration authority must note the aforementioned restrictions in the vehicle registration document.
