Ausfuhrkennzeichen dienen zur befristeten Zulassung für Fahrzeuge, die in Deutschland keinen Standort mehr haben und aus eigener Kraft dauerhaft ins Ausland verbracht werden sollen. Sie werden auch Exportkennzeichen oder Zollkennzeichen genannt.
Ausfuhrkennzeichen werden nur für im Inland befindliche Fahrzeuge zugeteilt. Für die Beantragung müssen Sie mit Hauptwohnung in Jena gemeldet sein bzw. der Firmensitz muss sich in Jena befinden. Sofern im Inland kein Wohnsitz bzw. kein Fimensitz vorhanden ist, so ist ein Empfangsbevollmächtigter mit Hauptwohnung in Jena zu benennen (siehe Downloads).
Ausfuhrkennzeichen werden auf der Grundlage einer bestehenden deutschen Betriebserlaubnis zugeteilt. Mit Zuteilung des Kennzeichens endet die deutsche Betriebserlaubnis.
Details
Prerequisites for allocation
- Tax liability: Since 1.7.2010, export licence plates are subject to tax from the first day of allocation. The license plates are issued after a domestic bank account has been provided for the collection of the tax. If there is no domestic bank account, the applicant must pay the tax in cash at the relevant main customs office. The tax is assessed on the basis of a vehicle tax declaration. This is issued by the registration authority when the application is made. The registration process can only be completed once the tax assessment notice from the main customs office and the confirmation of payment have been submitted.
- Existing operating licence of the vehicle - deleted vehicles require a full certificate in accordance with § 21 StVZO to regain operating licence
- valid main inspection or safety inspection or an expert opinion on the inspection to this extent with confirmation of road safety
Registration period
Export licence plates are issued for the duration of the proven insurance cover. The maximum period is 1 year. The registration period always begins on the day the licence plate is issued and ends on the day indicated in the red box. After the expiry date of the export licence plate, vehicles bearing it may no longer be used or parked on public roads.
In addition to the new registration certificate Part I, an international registration certificate can also be applied for (the details are then described in different languages).

Opening hours
Document issue - without an appointment
Documents that have already been applied for and are now ready for collection (passport, ID card and eID card as well as documents from the driving license authority) can be collected from reception during opening hours without an appointment.
Other requests with an appointment
An appointment must be booked for personal visits for other matters. This can be done online or by telephone.

Please note
On 23.12.2025 the area is only open until 16:00. The area is closed on 02.01.2026. The department cannot be reached by telephone from 4 p.m. on 23.12.2025 and all day on 02.01.2026.

| Costs for embossing the registration plates |
The registration authority uses special adhesive seals with special security features for the vehicle documents. This increases the total fees by € 0.30 per adhesive seal used.
