Apply for an Export License Plate
Export license plates are used for temporary registration of vehicles that are no longer based in Germany and are to be permanently transported abroad under their own power. They are also referred to as export plates or customs plates.
Export license plates are issued only for vehicles located within Germany. To apply, you must be registered with your primary residence in Jena , or your company’s registered office must be located in Jena . If you do not have a domestic residence or company registered office, you must designate an authorized representative with a primary residence in Jena (see Downloads).
Export license plates are issued on the basis of an existing German vehicle registration certificate. The German vehicle registration certificate expires upon issuance of the export license plate.

Requirements for Allocation
- Tax Liability: As of July 1, 2010, export license plates are subject to tax from the first day of issuance. License plates are issued after providing a Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) bank account for the collection of the tax. If you do not have a SEPA bank account, the applicant must pay the tax in cash at the responsible main customs office. The tax is assessed based on a motor vehicle tax return. This must be filed with the responsible main customs office. At the time of registration, the tax assessment notice from the main customs office and the payment receipt must be presented, provided no SEPA bank account information is available.
- Valid vehicle registration—decommissioned vehicles require a comprehensive inspection report in accordance with § 21 StVZO to regain registration
- Valid general inspection or safety inspection, or a report on an inspection of this scope confirming roadworthiness
Registration Period
Export license plates are issued for the duration of the documented insurance coverage. The maximum period is 1 year. The registration period always begins on the date the license plate is issued and ends on the date indicated in the red field. After the expiration date of the export license plate, vehicles bearing it may no longer be driven or parked on public roads.
In addition to the new Part I Registration Certificate, an International Registration Certificate may also be requested (the information will then be provided in various languages).

Document Pickup - No Appointment Required
You can pick up documents that have already been requested and are now ready for pickup (passports, ID cards, eID cards, and documents from the driver’s license office) at the front desk during business hours without an appointment.

| Costs for embossing the license plates |
The registration authority uses special adhesive seals with specific security features for vehicle documents. This increases the total fees by €0.30 for each adhesive seal used.
