Calculation of after-school care fees

The user fees for after-school care centers at municipal primary and community schools in Jena are determined and set by the Family Services team.

Amount of the user fees

The amount of the user fees is generally based on

  • the adjusted income,
  • the number of children entitled to child benefit in the household,
  • the number of children attending a facility (e.g. day care, day nursery or after-school care) and
  • the weekly care time

Definition of income

In principle, the income of the parents (also in the case of the alternating model or "50:50 care") as well as that of the after-school child concerned is required. If the parents live separately and the child lives exclusively with one parent, their income and that of any spouse living with the parent or partner in a registered civil partnership as well as that of the after-school child concerned is required.

The adjusted income is calculated from

a) the gross income, less a flat-rate deduction of

  • 34% for income subject to tax and social security contributions
  • 24% for civil servants' salaries
  • 50 % for income subject to income tax only (exclusive)
  • 14% for income subject to income tax only (plus)
  • 16 % for income subject to social security contributions only (midi-jobs)
  • 5 % for income not subject to tax or social security contributions

b) other income in cash or cash equivalents (e.g. alimony)

c) Deduction of income-related expenses according to the previous year's tax assessment or a lump sum of EUR 1,230.00

d) Deduction of maintenance payments to third parties and an allowance of 220.00 euros for each additional child entitled to child benefit in the household

Income above the upper income limit

If the adjusted income is above 2,500.00 euros, no information on financial circumstances is required. Only a current proof of child benefit from the 2nd child onwards (e.g. bank statement or similar) must be enclosed.

Income below the upper income limit

If the adjusted income is below 2,500.00 euros, all proof of income in cash or cash equivalents (the average monthly income of the calendar year preceding the respective school year of the after-school care - e.g. school year 2025/2026 - income 2024) as well as a current proof of child benefit (e.g. bank statement or similar) must be submitted for calculation.

Exemption from user fees

Anyone who, during the current period of after-school care, is a recipient of benefits

  • to secure their livelihood in accordance with the Second Book of the German Social Code (SGB II) (e.g. citizen's allowance)
  • for subsistence assistance or basic security in old age and in the event of reduced earning capacity in accordance with the Twelfth Book of the German Social Code (SGB XII),
  • according to the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act or
  • according to § 6a of the Federal Child Benefit Act (supplementary child allowance)

will be exempted from the user fees for the duration of receipt of these benefits upon application and presentation of suitable documentation from the calendar month of application at the earliest.

Changes in income and changes in childcare hours

Changes in income of more than 20% and changes in the number of children entitled to child benefit in the household must be reported immediately to the Family Service Team.

Changes to childcare times must be agreed with the after-school care center of the primary or community school.

As the user fees are income-dependent, we require the following applicable proof of income to determine the fee amount (the average monthly income of the calendar year preceding the respective school year of after-school care is always decisive - e.g. school year 2025/2026 - income 2024):

  • Gross annual income of the parent(s) (tax assessment notice(s) or complete payslip for the year)
  • Self-employment of the parent(s) (tax assessment notice(s))
  • Child benefit from the 2nd child (current proof, e.g. bank statement or similar - not older than 3 months)
  • Maintenance / advance maintenance payments (e.g. bank statement or similar)
  • Parental allowance / maternity allowance
  • BAföG / vocational training allowance (BAB) / scholarship (complete)
  • Housing benefit
  • ALG I
  • Pensions (e.g. reduced earning capacity pension, disability pension, orphan's pension)
  • Other income in cash or cash equivalents

If you are currently receiving the following benefits, please submit the relevant notification for exemption from payment of user fees:

  • Securing your livelihood in accordance with the Second Book of the German Social Code (SGB II) (e.g. citizen's allowance)
  • Assistance with living expenses or basic security in old age and in the event of reduced earning capacity in accordance with the Twelfth Book of the German Social Code (SGB XII)
  • Asylum seeker benefits in accordance with the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act
  • Benefits in accordance with § 6a of the Federal Child Benefit Act (supplementary child allowance)
