District mayor election

Die Ortsteilbürgermeister werden zugleich mit den Stadtratsmitgliedern gewählt; der Wahltermin wird durch die Landesregierung festgelegt. Die nächste Wahl findet am 26.05.2024 statt. Eventuelle Stichwahlen finden vierzehn Tage später am 09.06.2024 statt.

The district mayors are elected at the same time as the city council members. The term of office begins and ends with the statutory term of office of the City Council. In the event of a re-election, it shall begin no earlier than the day after the election is accepted.

Eligibility to vote

Every national of an EU state or every German who has reached the age of 16 on election day and has had his or her main place of residence in the district in question for at least three months and has not been excluded from the right to vote may vote. If the voter moves within Jena in the 3 months before the election date, he is not entitled to vote in either the former or the current district.

Eligibility

Eligible for the office of the local district mayor are eligible voters who have reached the age of 21 on the day of the election and have had their main residence in the local district for at least 6 months.

Election proposals

Election proposals can be submitted by parties, voter groups and individual candidates. If only one or no valid election proposal is admitted, the election is carried out without being bound to election proposals.

Local District Mayor Election

The election day for the local district mayor election is determined by the state government. The term of office shall be five years and shall begin on the first day of the next month following the election day. The local district forms the electoral area. A district mayor is elected according to the principles of majority voting. Each voter has one vote.

The person who has received more than half of the valid votes cast is elected. If no one receives this majority, a run-off election takes place on the second Sunday after election day between the two persons who received the highest number of votes in the first election. In the event of a tie, the winner of the runoff election shall be determined by lot. In the run-off election, the person who has received the highest number of valid votes from those cast shall be elected. The electoral area is the local district.

The election notification letters are sent from the 38th day before the election.

Application for absentee ballot papers

  • Online application for ab sentee ballots starts on the 34th day before the election and ends on the Thursday before the election date as the documents would probably not reach you in time. This also applies to applications made by informal e-mail.
  • Written application / personal appearance / proxy: On the back of the election notification letter you will find an application form for postal voting documents. Please use this form if you wish to apply for your postal voting documents by post, by fax or by personal appearance, or if you wish to authorise a third person to collect your postal voting documents.
  • In case of proven sudden illness, absentee ballots can still be collected on election Sunday from 08:00 to 15:00. To do so, please call Am Anger 28, 07743 Jena.
  • The deadline for submitting nominations for election to the City Council is 6:00 p.m. on the 44th day before the election.
  • Election notification letters are sent out from the 30th day before the election.
  • Deadline to apply online for absentee ballots begins the 34th day before the election and ends the Thursday before the election date.
  • The absentee ballot must be returned to the election authority of the city of Jena by 6:00 p.m. on election day.
