Driver's license - name change
Correction of the driving license due to a change of name is not mandatory, but is recommended if you intend to travel abroad.
If you still have an old driving license (grey / pink), you must exchange it for the new card driving license, as the change in the old driving license is no longer permitted by law. In this case, please note the information on exchanging for the EU card driver's license.

Prerequisites
You have your main place of residence in Jena.
The change of name has already been noted at the registration office. You are already in possession of an identity card / passport with a new name (also temporary identity card / passport).
Submitting an application
It is not possible to apply by proxy, as the card driving license contains your signature, which must be provided at the time of application.
You must apply for the replacement document in person. You do not need to fill out an application form. It will be prepared by us and simply signed by you.
Documents
- Passport or identity card
- Photograph: Please bring a printed photograph that is no more than three months old and complies with biometric regulations. The photo must be 3.5 x 4.5 cm in size. You can find out what the photo must look like on the Bundesdruckerei website (see links)
- Driver's license: If the existing driver's license was not issued by the city of Jena, a file card copy from the foreign driver's license authority that issued the driver's license is required. Please request the file card copy yourself from the relevant driving license authority and have it sent directly to us or sent by fax.
- Proof of driving licenses issued in the former GDR from 1968 to 1982 (index card "VK 30")
Opening hours
Document issue - without an appointment
You can collect documents from the reception on the first floor during the opening hours of the Citizens' Service (without an appointment).
Other requests with an appointment
An appointment must be booked for personal visits for other matters. This can be done online or by telephone.

Please note
On 23.12.2025 the area is only open until 4 pm. The area is closed on 02.01.2026. The department cannot be reached by telephone from 4 p.m. on 23.12.2025 and all day on 02.01.2026.
