Details
Prerequisite
You have your main residence in Jena.
Application
It is not possible to stand in for the application, as a new driver's license must be issued in the course of the renewal, which contains your signature, which must be provided at the time of application. You do not have to fill in an application form. It will be prepared by us and only signed by you.
Apply online
You can also apply for the renewal for the C classes online at the driving licence authority(link is external). To do this, please have your old driving licence ready, as you will need to enter the data accordingly.
Limitation of classes
With the introduction of the new driving licence law on 01.01.1999, some driving licence classes were limited in time. This means that certain classes are only issued for a certain period of time when they are issued or extended for the first time, or when they are issued again after withdrawal, renunciation or refusal. If these classes are to continue to be valid after expiry of the time limit, an application for extension must be submitted. Driving licence classes with unlimited validity are not affected by the expiry of a time limit.
The exact time limit for the driving licence classes can be found in column 11 on the reverse of the new EU driving licences.
Driving licences for categories C and CE are issued for a period of five years. Driving licences for categories C1 and C1E are issued for a period of five years until the applicant reaches the age of 50 or after the applicant reaches the age of 45. The period of validity of the driving licence is to be extended by a further five years in each case if the requirements are fulfilled by you.
Procedure/Deadlines
- Driving licences for categories C and CE shall be issued for a period of five years. Driving licences for categories C1 and C1E are issued for a period of five years until the applicant reaches the age of 50 or after the applicant reaches the age of 45.
- You should apply for the extension of these categories approximately three months before the expiry date, so that your driving licence can be extended before then and you thus retain continuous possession.
- The basis for determining the period of validity of the renewed driving licence is the date on which the driving licence to be renewed expires.
- A new driving licence will be issued with the renewal. The driving licence will be produced centrally by Bundesdruckerei in Berlin after you have submitted your application and your documents have been checked.
- Once the EU card driving licence has been ordered, you will be notified by us and can collect the driving licence from our document issuing office on presentation of your old driving licence.
Documents
- Passport or identity card
- Photo: Please bring a photo that is not older than three months and complies with biometric regulations. The picture must be 3.5 x 4.5 cm. You can find out what the picture must look like on the Bundesdruckerei website (see links).
- Driver's license: If the existing driver's license was not issued by the city of Jena, an index card copy of the foreign driver's license authority that issued the driver's license is necessary. Please request the copy of the index card yourself from the responsible driving licence authority and have it sent directly to us or sent by fax. If you still have an old driving licence (grey/pink), you must apply for the new licence at the same time as you apply for a driving licence for the carriage of passengers. In this case, please note the information on "Exchange for the EU driving licence card".
- Proof of driving licence issuance (index card "VK 30") for issuance in the former GDR from 1968 to 1982
- Proof of adequate eyesight: Proof by means of an expert opinion or certificate from an ophthalmologist or a company/occupational physician - an issued expert opinion/certificate is valid for two years.
- Proof of health suitability: Proof must be provided in the form of a certificate from a doctor of your choice, taking into account Appendix 5 to the Driving Licence Ordinance. At the time of application, the certificate must not be older than one year. The required form is available under Links.
