Driving licence - renewal of temporary D driving licence categories

Prerequisite

You have your main residence in Jena.

Application

It is not possible to stand in for the application, as a new driver's license must be issued in the course of the renewal, which contains your signature, which must be provided at the time of application. You do not have to fill in an application form. It will be prepared by us and only signed by you.

If you reach the age of 50 in the course of the next 5 years, the extension is only possible up to this point. An extension beyond the age of 50 can only take place if a performance psychology report is submitted. When submitting your application, you must declare which body you have commissioned to prepare the performance psychology report. After your application documents have been checked, the driving licence authority will commission the preparation of the report.

Online application

It is not possible to apply online for the renewal of D classes.

Limitation of classes

With the introduction of the new driving licence law on 01.01.1999, some driving licence classes were limited in time. This means that certain classes are only issued for a certain period of time when they are issued for the first time or extended, or when they are issued again after withdrawal, waiver or refusal. If these classes are to continue to be valid, an application for extension of the respective driving licence classes must be submitted.

The exact time limit for the driving licence classes can be found in column 11 on the reverse of the new EU driving licences.

Classes D1, D1E, D and DE are issued for five years, but at the longest until the driver reaches the age of 50.

  • Classes D1, D1E, D and DE are issued for five years, but no longer than until the age of 50. Thereafter, an extension is granted on application for five years in each case, for which a performance psychology report is required.
  • The application must be submitted at the earliest 6 months before the expiry of the validity of the previous driving licence.
  • The basis for determining the period of validity of the extended driving licence is the date on which the driving licence to be extended expires.
  • A new driving licence is issued with the extension. The driving licence will be produced by Bundesdruckerei in Berlin after you have submitted your application and your documents have been checked.

  • Passport or identity card
  • Photo: Please bring a photo that is not older than three months and complies with biometric regulations. The picture must be 3.5 x 4.5 cm. You can find out what the picture must look like on the Bundesdruckerei website (see links).
  • Driver's license: If the existing driver's license was not issued by the city of Jena, an index card copy of the foreign driver's license authority that issued the driver's license is necessary. Please request the copy of the index card yourself from the relevant driving licence authority and have it sent directly to us or sent by fax.
  • Proof of sufficient eyesight: Proof by means of an expert opinion or certificate from an ophthalmologist or a company/occupational physician - an issued expert opinion/certificate is valid for two years.
  • Proof of health suitability: Proof must be provided in the form of a certificate from a doctor of your choice, taking into account Appendix 5 to the Driving Licence Ordinance. At the time of application, the certificate must not be older than one year. The required form is available under Links.
  • A performance psychology certificate is required for the renewal of categories D, D1, DE and D1E from the age of 50. The examination includes, for example, a check of the ability to cope with stress, reaction time, orientation and concentration. Proof that these special requirements have been met is provided by an expert opinion from an officially recognised assessment centre for driving aptitude. The examination is commissioned by the driving licence authority after application.
  • An official certificate of good conduct (document type "O") is to be applied for by the applicant in person, stating the purpose "extension of passenger transport", at the registration office responsible for his/her main place of residence (in Jena also when applying at the driving licence authority).
