Driving license - Extension of temporary C driving license categories

Anyone who drives a motor vehicle on public roads requires a permit (driving license) from the competent authority (driving license authority). The driving license is issued in certain categories. It must be evidenced by an official certificate (driving license).

Source: Section 2 (1) of the Road Traffic Act

Prerequisite

You have your main residence in Jena.

Application

It is not possible to apply by proxy, as a new card driver's license must be issued as part of the renewal process, which contains your signature, which must be provided at the time of application. You do not need to fill out an application form. It is created by us and simply signed by you.

Apply online

You can also apply for a C-class renewal online at the driving license authority. Please have your old driver's license ready as you will need to enter the data accordingly.

Limitation of classes

With the introduction of the new driving license law on 01.01.1999, some driving license classes were limited in time. This means that certain categories are only issued for a certain period of time when they are issued or extended for the first time or when they are reissued after withdrawal, waiver or refusal. If these categories are to remain valid after the expiry of the time limit, an application for extension must be submitted. Driving license categories valid for an unlimited period are not affected by the expiry of a time limit.
The exact time limit for the driving license categories can be found in column 11 on the back of the new EU driving licenses.

Driving licenses for categories C and CE are issued for a period of five years. Class C1 and C1E driving licenses are issued for a period of five years until the applicant reaches the age of 50 or after reaching the age of 45. The period of validity of the driving license is to be extended by a further five years in each case if you meet the requirements.

  • Driving licenses for categories C and CE are issued for a period of five years. Driving licenses for categories C1 and C1E are issued for a period of five years until the applicant reaches the age of 50 or after reaching the age of 45.
  • You should submit the application for the extension of these categories approximately three months before the expiry date so that your driving license can be extended before then and you therefore retain a continuous entitlement.
  • The basis for determining the period of validity of the extended driving license is the date on which the driving license to be extended expires.
  • A new driving license is issued with the extension. The driving license will be produced centrally by the Bundesdruckerei in Berlin after you have submitted your application and your documents have been checked.
  • When the EU card driving license is available after ordering, you will be notified by us and can collect the driving license on presentation of your old driving license.
  • Passport or identity card
  • Photograph: Please bring a photograph that is not older than three months and complies with biometric regulations. The photo must be 3.5 x 4.5 cm in size. You can find out what the photo must look like on the Bundesdruckerei website (see links)
  • Driver's license: If the existing driver's license was not issued by the city of Jena, a file card copy from the foreign driver's license authority that issued the driver's license is required. Please request the file card copy yourself from the relevant driving license authority and have it sent directly to us or sent by fax. If you still have an old driving license (grey/pink), you must also apply to exchange it for the new card driving license when you apply for a driving license for passenger transport. In this case, please note the information on "Exchange to the EU card driver's license".
  • Proof of driving licenses issued (VK 30 card) in the former GDR from 1968 to 1982
  • Proof of sufficient eyesight: Proof by means of an expert opinion or certificate from an ophthalmologist or an occupational physician - an issued expert opinion/certificate is valid for two years
  • Proof of medical fitness: Proof must be provided in the form of a certificate from a doctor of your choice, taking into account Annex 5 of the Driving License Ordinance. The certificate must not be older than one year at the time of application. The form to be completed by the doctor is available under Downloads.
