Education and Participation Package for Recipients of Housing Benefit and Social Assistance

Anyone who receives either social assistance, housing benefit or the child supplement for their child may also be eligible for certain benefits under the Education and Participation Package (BuT).

  • Recipients of the Bürgergeld should contact their designated benefits adviser at the Jenarbeit Jobcentre.
  • Recipients of asylum seeker’s benefitsshould contact asyl-but@jena.de only.

Applications must always be submitted during the current approval period – but as soon as possible.

Applications can be made for

Communal lunch provision

If communal lunches are provided under the school’s responsibility, in nursery schools or by childminders, a free lunch may be granted.

School supplies

Pupils attending a general or vocational school receive a lump-sum cash payment twice a school year (on 1 August and 1 February of each school year) to cover the cost of school supplies.

One-day school/nursery trips or school trips lasting several days

The costs of one-day school or nursery trips, or school trips lasting several days, may be covered in accordance with the provisions of school regulations.

Participation in social and cultural life

Children and young people who have not yet reached the age of 18 receive a monthly lump-sum payment to enable them to take part in club activities or attend cultural or community-organised leisure activities.

Learning support

If the school confirms the need, appropriate supplementary learning support (in addition to that provided by the educational institution) may be granted.

School transport

Where costs are incurred for journeys that are legally defined as school transport (year groups 1–4: at least 2 km / from Year 5 onwards, a minimum of 3 km to school) and are not covered elsewhere (e.g. by the Jena School Administration; the relevant application form is available from the school office), these costs may be covered.

Note

The application forms provided here (available under ‘Downloads’) can be completed online.

Please always enclose with your application (see Downloads)

  • the current housing benefit decision (in full) or
  • the latest proof of entitlement to the child supplement.

As these notices form the basis for the payment of BuT benefits, it is essential that you always submit them.

When does the application need to be renewed?

Please check your approval notice from the housing benefit authority or the family benefits office. Whenever you submit a follow-up application there, you must also resubmit the relevant forms (which can be found on the right under ‘Downloads’) to us.
