EU card driving licence - exchange

Prerequisite

You have your main residence in Jena.

Application

A representation for the application is not possible, since the card driver's license contains your signature, which must already be made with the application. You do not have to fill in an application form. It will be prepared by us and only signed by you.

Apply online

You can also apply for an EU driving licence online at the driving licence office.

To do this, please have your old driving licence ready, as you will need to enter the data accordingly.

If your driving licence was issued in the former GDR between 1968 and 1982, you must still be in possession of the proof that you were issued a driving licence (index card "VK 30"). Please enclose this proof with your signed application documents and send them to us.

If you are a holder of the old class 3, you must answer further questions in the window that appears. You will find more information on this under the notes on the respective classes.

Obligation to exchange

The validity of driving licences issued from 19.01.2013 is limited to 15 years.

Driving licences issued before 19 January 2013 must be exchanged by 19 January 2033.

However, in the following cases, the exchange is required immediately:

• You wish to be issued an International Driver's License and do not yet have a new card driver's license.
• You wish to apply for a driving licence for the carriage of passengers and do not yet have a new card driving licence.
• If you hold a class 2 driving licence, your entitlement to drive the relevant vehicles ends when you reach the age of 50. If you still wish to drive the relevant vehicles after this age, you should exchange your driving licence in good time. In this context, you should note that if you do not exchange your licence in good time, the new categories C and CE will have to be issued. As a result, the status of ownership will no longer be evident from the driving licence. In addition, higher fees will be incurred.

• When the EU driving licence is available after ordering, you will be notified by us and can pick up your driving licence at our document issuing office upon presentation of your old driving licence.

• Passport or identity card
• Photo: Please bring a photo that is not older than three months and complies with biometric regulations. The picture must be 3.5 x 4.5 cm. You can find out what the picture must look like on the Bundesdruckerei website (see links).
• Driver's license: If the existing driver's license was not issued by the city of Jena, an index card copy of the foreign driver's license authority that issued the driver's license is necessary. Please request the copy of the index card yourself from the responsible driving licence authority and have it sent directly to us or sent by fax.
