Genealogy

The City Archives hold a wide variety of genealogical sources that you can use to research your family history. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact us in writing.

Old address books are often a useful starting point for family history research (-> Links).

With the amendment to the Civil Status Act effective January 1, 2009, civil registry records whose retention periods have expired have become archival records. The City Archives is happy to provide information from the following registry volumes:

  • Jena Civil Registry Office – Birth Records up to 1914
  • Jena Civil Registry Office – Marriage Records up to 1944
  • Jena Civil Registry Office – Death Records up to 1994
  • Wenigenjena (-Camsdorf) Civil Registry Office, 1876–1909

For preservation reasons, access is limited to the provision of written information and/or copies. No certificates within the meaning of the Civil Status Act are issued from archived civil status records. Copies, extracts, or certified copies may be provided in accordance with applicable archival law.

Information from the following years’ birth, marriage, and death registers of the Jena Registry Office can only be requested from the Jena Registry Office.

The Jena Registry Office also continues to provide all information from the civil status records of the following dissolved registry offices: Ammerbach, Burgau, Cospeda, Isserstedt, Jenaprießnitz, Kunitz, Lichtenhain, Lobeda, Maua, Vierzehnheiligen, and Zwätzen.
