Marriage

You can register your marriage at the Jena registry office if one of the partners has their main or secondary residence in Jena. In principle, both partners should register the marriage together.

If one person is unable to attend for an important reason, the other partner must bring a declaration of entry (power of attorney) from the partner who is unable to attend.

The marriage registration remains valid for six months.

Number of guests

In addition to the registrar and the bride and groom, 25 other people may be present as guests of the bride and groom during a wedding ceremony in the Historic Town Hall. Witnesses, photographers and children (including their own children) are already included in this number.

Cancellation or postponement of the wedding

If you wish to postpone or cancel your planned wedding, please inform us in writing (by e-mail eheschliessungen@jena.de).

Participation of non-German nationals

In civil status cases where the parties involved do not have German citizenship or for which foreign civil status law is also applied for certification (e.g. through foreign documents), please always enquire in advance in person at the registry office about the necessary documents and the appropriate procedure.

Reservations for marriage appointments can also be made by telephone on Mondays and Wednesdays from 09:00 - 12:00.

All documents required to register the marriage must be complete and in the original.

  • Valid identity document (identity card or passport)
  • extended registration certificate from the registration office of the main residence of both partners (maximum 3 weeks old at the time of registration)
  • newly issued certified copies from the birth registers for both partners
  • for joint premarital children: Birth or parentage certificate of the children; acknowledgement of paternity if the father is not yet listed in the certificate; declaration of custody (if available)
  • if one or both partners were already married and the marriage has been dissolved by divorce, the marriage certificate and a legally binding divorce decree from the last marriage must also be submitted
  • if one of the partners is widowed, the marriage certificate and the death certificate must be submitted
  • if the main residence of both applicants is not in Jena, an additional certificate of residence from the Jena Citizens' Registration Office to establish the jurisdiction of the Jena Registry Office
  • documentary evidence if a change of name has taken place
