Apply for an eID card for EU and EEA nationals
Die eID-Karte ermöglicht den elektronischen Identitätsnachweis bei Online-Vorgängen. Weiterhin ist das sogenannte Vor-Ort-Auslesen möglich.
Die eID-Karte ist wiederum kein Personal-, Reise- oder Aufenthaltsdokument und dient nicht zum Nachweis Ihrer aktuellen Meldeanschrift.
Details
From 01 January 2021, European Union (EU) nationals and European Economic Area (EEA) nationals will be able to apply for a card with electronic proof of identity (eID) function.
Requirements
- Possession of a nationality of a member state of the European Union (EU) or of the European Economic Area (EEA)
- No possession of German citizenship within the meaning of Article 116 (1) of the Basic Law (Grundgesetz)
- applicant must be at least 16 years old
- main residence in Jena
Period of validity
The eID card is issued for a period of validity of 10 years. An extension is not permitted. When the period of validity expires, a new eID card can be applied for.
Loss, theft
The loss or theft of a valid eID card must be reported in writing or in person. If the report has already been made to the police, please bring the duplicate with you.
Procedure/Deadlines
Application
The application must be submitted during the personal interview. It is not permissible to appoint a proxy. Juveniles who are at least 16 years old may submit the application alone.
Issue / collection
After receiving the PIN letter from the Bundesdruckerei, the eID card can be picked up at the central registration desk on the ground floor of Löbdergraben 12 of the Bürgerservice.

Opening hours
Document issue - without an appointment
Documents that have already been applied for and are now ready for collection (passport, ID card and eID card as well as documents from the driving license authority) can be collected from reception during opening hours without an appointment.
Other requests with an appointment
An appointment must be booked for personal visits for other matters. This can be done online or by telephone.

Please note
On 23.12.2025 the area is only open until 16:00. The area is closed on 02.01.2026. The department cannot be reached by telephone from 4 p.m. on 23.12.2025 and all day on 02.01.2026.
