Prerequisites for the allocation

• The vehicle must be at least 30 years old, correspond as far as possible to the original condition and be in a good state of preservation.
• A classic car certificate in accordance with § 23 StVZO must be available.
• Your vehicle is primarily used for the maintenance of motor vehicle cultural assets.

General inspection

Vehicles with classic car registration plates are also subject to the obligation to undergo a general inspection.

All registration types

A vintage license plate for historic vehicles is possible for all types of registration.

• Vintage car certificate according to § 23 StVZO
• Registration certificate part I and part II or vehicle title and vehicle registration certificate
• Vehicle registration number, if the vehicle is registered
• Certificates of the valid general inspection (original)
• Electronic confirmation of insurance (eVB)
• SEPA direct debit mandate for collection of vehicle tax
• General documents on the vehicle owner (see Downloads)

The costs for registering a vehicle with a historic number plate depend on the respective registration type (transfer, re-registration, ...).

The minimum fee for the allocation of a vintage number plate is €27.40.

The registration authority uses special adhesive seals with special security features for the vehicle documents. This increases the total fees by € 0.30 per adhesive seal used.

Tax

The responsible main customs office levies a flat-rate tax of €191.73 per year ( €46.02 for motorcycles) for vehicles with vintage license plates.

• § 2 No. 22 FZV (definition): "Oldtimer: Vehicles that first came into circulation at least 30 years ago, are as close as possible to their original condition, are in a good state of preservation and are used for the maintenance of motor vehicle cultural assets;...".
• § 23 StVZO (classic car appraisal): "For the classification of a vehicle as a classic car within the meaning of § 2 No. 22 of the Vehicle Registration Ordinance, an appraisal by an officially recognized expert or tester or test engineer is required."
• The appraisal shall be carried out in accordance with a guideline published in the Verkehrsblatt with the approval of the competent supreme state authorities and the appraisal shall be drawn up in accordance with a model specified in the guideline. Within the scope of the assessment, an examination to the extent of a main inspection in accordance with § 29 shall also be carried out, unless an expert opinion in accordance with § 21 is prepared at the same time as the assessment."
