Driver card - renewal

These devices digitally record the driving and rest times of commercial drivers and are gradually replacing the previous tachograph. The recording devices are operated using special chip cards for drivers, known as "driver cards".

Prerequisite

You have your main place of residence in Jena.

Submitting an application

It is not possible to apply by proxy, as the driver card contains your signature, which must be provided at the time of application. You do not have to fill out an application form. It is created by us and simply signed by you.

Apply online

You can also apply for a driver card renewal online at the driver licensing authority. To ensure that your application is processed quickly and smoothly, it is advantageous to enter your e-mail address and telephone number on the application form when submitting your application. This will enable us to shorten the information process.

Please have your EU driving license ready, as you will need to enter the data accordingly.

• The application for renewal of the driver card must be submitted to the driver licensing authority no later than 15 working days and no earlier than 6 months before the expiry date of the old driver card.
• When the driver card is available after ordering, you will be notified by us and can collect the driver card on presentation of your identity card or passport.
• The validity of the driver card is limited to 5 years.
• The validity of the new card immediately follows the expiration date of the old card.
• Please note that the expired driver card must be carried for at least 28 days in addition to the new one (§ 6 FPersV).

• Photograph: Please bring a photograph that is no more than three months old and complies with biometric regulations. The photo must be 3.5 x 4.5 cm in size. You can find out what the photo must look like on the Bundesdruckerei website (see links)
• EU card driving license
