Driving license - Extension D classes

Prerequisites

You have your main residence in Jena. You are of the required minimum age or will reach it in the near future.

Application

It is not possible to apply by proxy, as the card driver's license contains your signature, which must be provided at the time of application. You do not have to fill out an application form. It is created by us and simply signed by you.

• The application may be submitted at the earliest 6 months before reaching the minimum age.
• When submitting your application, you must declare which body you wish to commission to carry out the psychological assessment. Once your application documents have been checked, the driving license authority will commission the expert opinion.
• Once all documents have been received, your application will be finally checked and we will then issue the testing order to the testing organization. Your driving school will be notified and can then register you for the test.
• Once you have passed the practical test, the examiner will issue you with a provisional certificate of driving authorization and confiscate your old driver's license. The testing organization will inform us that you have passed the test. We will then order your driving license from the Bundesdruckerei in Berlin. The driving license will be sent to you directly by post (the cost of postage cannot be avoided).

• Passport or identity card
• Photograph: Please bring a printed photograph that is not older than three months and complies with biometric regulations. The photo must be 3.5 x 4.5 cm in size. You can find out what the photo must look like on the Bundesdruckerei website (see links).
• Driver's license: If the existing driver's license was not issued by the city of Jena, a file card copy from the foreign driver's license authority that issued the driver's license is required. Please request the copy of the file card yourself from the relevant driving license authority and have it sent directly to us or sent by fax.
• Training contract from the driving school
• Proof of sufficient eyesight: Proof by means of an expert opinion or certificate from an ophthalmologist or a company/occupational physician - an issued expert opinion/certificate is valid for two years
• Proof of medical fitness: Proof must be provided in the form of a certificate from a doctor of your choice, taking into account Annex 5 of the Driving License Ordinance. The certificate must not be older than one year at the time of application. The form to be completed by the doctor is available under Downloads.
• Proof of first aid training
• A performance psychology report is required for the issue of a D-category driver's license. The examination includes, for example, an examination of resilience, responsiveness, orientation and concentration. Proof of compliance with these special requirements is provided by an expert opinion from an officially recognized assessment centre for driving aptitude. This report must be submitted to the driving license authority and can be prepared in advance. The certificate must not be older than 1 year at the time of application.
• An official certificate of good conduct (document type "O") must be applied for in person by the applicant, stating the purpose of use "Permit to carry passengers", at the registration office responsible for his/her main place of residence (in Jena also when applying at the driving license authority).

The fee includes the cost of a driving license. If you are applying for several categories, it may be necessary for you to obtain several provisional proofs of driving authorization or driving licenses for the respective categories you have obtained by the time you take the final test. This would incur additional fees.
