Prerequisite

You have your main residence in Jena.

Application

It is not possible to apply by proxy, as you must sign the International Driver's License before it is issued. You do not have to fill out an application form. It will be created by us and simply signed by you.

You can also apply for an International Driving Permit online at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.

Validity

The International Driver's License is usually issued with a validity of three years, a shorter validity is possible if there are temporary C/D classes that are valid for less than 3 years and the entry of these classes in the International Driver's License cannot be waived. An International Driver's License cannot be extended after its validity has expired; a new license must always be issued.

Notes on the international driving license

The international driving license can be issued in addition to the national driving license. It is a "translation" of the national categories to international standards.

As a rule, the international driving license is only required outside of Europe. Information on the necessity of an International Driving License in individual countries can be obtained from automobile clubs or from the respective foreign representation.

An international driving license does not entitle the holder to drive a motor vehicle in Germany. If a driving ban is imposed, not only the national driving license issued by a German authority but also an International Driving Permit must be surrendered for the duration of the driving ban.

• If all documents are available, the International Driver's License will only be issued directly in person (prior appointment required).

• Passport or identity card
• Photograph: Please bring a printed photograph that is no more than three months old and complies with biometric regulations. The photo must be 3.5 x 4.5 cm in size. You can find out what the photo must look like on the Bundesdruckerei website (see links)
• National driving license: If you still have an old driving license (grey/pink), you must first exchange it for the new card driving license. In this case, please refer to the information on "Exchanging for the EU card driver's license".
• Copy of the card: If the driving license or the first copy was not issued by the city administration of Jena, you will need a copy of the index card from the foreign driving license authority that issued the driving license. Please request the file card copy yourself from the relevant driving license authority and have it sent directly to us or sent by fax.
