Declaration of Withdrawal from the Church

You must declare your withdrawal from the Church at the registry office for your main place of residence. The Jena Registry Office can therefore only accept your declaration of withdrawal from the Church if your main place of residence is in Jena. You can only declare your withdrawal from the Church in person. It is not possible for an authorised representative to make this declaration on your behalf.

You may declare your withdrawal from the church verbally. To do so, you must attend the Jena Registry Office in person. Your declaration of withdrawal will be recorded in writing and signed by you. Your withdrawal from the church takes effect on the day the declaration is made.

The declaration of withdrawal from the church cannot be submitted digitally (e.g. by email).

A declaration made before a notary only becomes legally valid once it has been received by the registry office responsible for processing the declaration.

• Identity card or passport (if presenting a passport, an extended registration certificate is also required)
• Birth certificate or, if married or in a registered civil partnership, a marriage certificate or civil partnership certificate

An administrative fee of 36.00 euros is charged for the declaration of withdrawal and for notifying the relevant bodies/authorities (registration office, religious community, tax office); this fee is payable immediately upon submission of the declaration.

If the declaration is submitted before a notary, a further fee of 36.00 euros is payable to the registry office for the subsequent processing.
