Registering a dog / re-registering a dog / chipping a dog
Anyone who keeps a dog must register the dog with the regulatory authority, the so-called Ordnungsamt. The owner of the dog is obliged to have the dog chipped - permanently and unmistakably with a forgery-proof, electronically readable transponder (microchip) by the vet. The owner must also take out appropriate dog owner's liability insurance. Both of these must be reported to the Municipal Regulations Department, Dog Ownership Division, when registering the dog and proof of this must be provided.
Dog tax must also be paid. The dog must therefore also be registered or deregistered with the municipal tax team for the payment of dog tax.
Details
Dogs must be registered with the local authorities for regulatory and tax purposes. The obligation to register dogs with the regulatory authorities is regulated in detail in the Thuringian law for the protection of the population from animal hazards.
The information provided by the dog owner is stored in the dog register of the Thuringian State Office for Statistics.
Violations of the laws and prohibitions of the Thuringian Law for the Protection of the Population from Animal Dangers (ThürTierGefG) are generally subject to fines of up to ten thousand euros.
