Vehicle re-registration after decommissioning

After a car registered under your name has been taken out of service, the vehicle's operating license remains valid. You can therefore re-register your vehicle at any time using the existing vehicle documents.

A new main inspection (e.g. TÜV) is only necessary if the last specified inspection period has expired during the period of decommissioning.

Re-registration of a vehicle after 7 years

The data of your vehicle will be stored in the Central Vehicle Register for 7 years after immobilization . If this period has already been exceeded when you wish to re-register your vehicle, the vehicle's operating license will expire. A general inspection is required to re-register the vehicle after 7 years. The vehicle registration document or the registration certificate must also be presented.

If you are unable to presentthese documents, the vehicle must undergo an individual operating license procedure. In this case, the steps from the registration procedure for self-built or not yet registered used vehicles apply.

Vehicle re-registration - Required documents

  • Registration certificate part I and part II or vehicle registration document and vehicle registration certificate with deregistration note
  • Certificates of the still valid general inspection, e.g. TÜV (original)
  • Electronic insurance confirmation (eVB, formerly insurance duplicate card)
  • SEPA direct debit mandate
  • Notification of special vehicle use, if applicable (see Downloads)
  • General documents on the vehicle owner (see Downloads)
  • If applicable, declaration on the use of the business address for the registration of vehicles for sole proprietorships and self-employed persons (see Downloads)
