Residence permit - opportunity card
The Chancenkarte (§ 20a AufenthG) is a residence permit for the purpose of seeking gainful employment or measures for the recognition of foreign professional qualifications.
It can only be applied for at the Immigration Office if you previously held a residence permit for the purpose of training (including studies) or gainful employment.
Details
The opportunity card entitles the holder to work for a maximum of 20 hours per week on average, as well as trial employment for a maximum of two weeks in each case.
The opportunity card can be issued if a foreigner
- can provide evidence of their continued independent means of subsistence and they
either
- is a skilled worker within the meaning of the Residence Act (Section 18 (3) AufenthG) and this is proven
or
- provides evidenceof at least 6 points on the table in the annex to Section 20b AufenthG (see downloads) and
- has a foreign professional qualification or a university degree that is recognized in the country in which the qualification was obtained and
- proves at least basic German language skills (A1) or English language skills at level B2
Procedure/deadlines
All incoming applications will be reviewed without a personal visit.

- passport
- Proof of residence (tenancy agreement, in the case of a sub-tenancy agreement also a declaration of consent from the owner, in the case of use of own living space [property] extract from the land register)
- Proof of health insurance
- Proof of how the stay is financed (e.g. declaration of commitment, blocked account, employment contract and salary certificate for the last two months, bank statements for the last two months, etc.)
- Proof of qualification (e.g. skilled worker certificate, university degree)
- In the case of a foreign qualification, proof of its recognition in Germany or in the country in which it was obtained
- Proof of language skills in German or English, if applicable
- Signed instruction sheet
- If applicable, declaration of consent to the storage and use of your e-mail address and telephone number
