Re-register your apartment

If you move within Jena, you must re-register within two weeks of the move. You must also report any changes in your residential status. This means that you must register if your main residence becomes a secondary residence or vice versa. A landlord's confirmation of residence must be submitted when registering a new home. The tenancy agreement alone is no longer sufficient.

Registering your main residence and secondary residence online

You can re-register your main residence in Jena in person or online. You can also re-register a secondary residence in Jena in person or online. For further information, see procedure/deadlines.

Early re-registration is not possible, as ID and vehicle documents cannot be changed in advance. The Citizens' Service also functions as a vehicle registration office. Therefore, please also bring your registration certificate part I (or vehicle registration document and certificate) as well as the certificate of the still valid general inspection (original) with you to change your address.

Resident parking permits are only issued after you have moved in.

Application

Registering your main residence online

You can easily re-register your main residence in Jena online. You will need the online ID function of your valid ID card or eID card and an NFC-enabled device to read your ID card (e.g. a smartphone). You will receive the address sticker for your ID card and, if applicable, passport by post. The registration confirmation will be made available to you online.

Requirements for using the electronic registration of residence:

Electronic registration and re-registration of a main residence is currently only possible when moving within Germany. In addition to individual registrations, family registrations are also possible. The prerequisite is that all persons are already linked in the residents' register and are moving together from one home within Germany to a new one. This applies to married and partnered persons and their underage children.

You will need

  • a valid identity card or an eID card and the corresponding 6-digit PIN number for the online ID function
  • a BundID account and the latest version of the ID card app (link to download)
  • a smartphone with an NFC interface or a PC with a card reader

This is how it works:

  1. Use the online ID function of your ID card or your eID card.
  2. Log in with your BundID account under Electronic residence registration.
  3. Complete the online form and upload any required documents. If you do not own the apartment, upload your landlord's confirmation of residence (see form to download).
  4. The registration office will check your details and inform you by e-mail.
  5. You return to the online service and retrieve the registration confirmation. You then update the address on the chip of your ID document with the online ID function activated.
  6. After successful processing, you will receive the address sticker for your ID card/passport by post. You can simply stick it on. That's all there is to it.

Vehicle and resident parking permit when re-registering a main residence:

You can update your vehicle documents online (i-Kfz), which is mandatory in connection with a change of main residence . If you have moved to an area with a resident parking permit and do not yet have a parking permit, you can apply for one online. If you need to change the parking zone of an existing resident parking permit, please book an appointment at the Citizens' Service, where the old parking permit will be confiscated and you will receive a new parking permit.

Online re-registration of a secondary residence

You can easily re-register a secondary residence in Jena online. You do not need an online ID card function for this. The registration confirmation will be sent to you.

Personal appointment

If you make an appointment, you can apply for the re-registration of a main residence, secondary residence and sole residence within Jena in person at the Citizens' Service.

  • Identity card
  • Confirmation from the landlord
    • A new Federal Registration Act (BMG) came into force on 01.11.2015. It states that the tenant must present a landlord's confirmation of residence. The tenancy agreement alone is not sufficient. Landlords are legally obliged to confirm in writing that tenants have moved in. The landlord's confirmation of residence must be presented to the registration authority when registering.
    • Landlord: The landlord is the person who actually lets another person use an apartment, regardless of whether this is based on an effective legal relationship. The landlord is usually the owner who rents out the apartment. However, the landlord can also be a person or body commissioned by the owner to rent out the apartment. For example, housing associations can be the owner and issue the landlord's confirmation through authorized representatives. Property management companies can also act as agents for the owner.
    • Landlord in the case of subletting: The main tenant can be the landlord for people who are subletting. The main tenant can also be the landlord if part of an apartment is given to a third party for actual use without consideration or only against reimbursement of expenses. It should be noted that some apartment owners/landlords only allow subletting by agreement. In these cases, the owner issues the landlord's confirmation. Ask your landlord/landlady for more information.
    • Owner as landlord: If the owner is moving into an apartment themselves, the confirmation is issued as a self-declaration by the person required to register. An extract from the land register or a notarized certificate of ownership must be submitted as proof of ownership.
  • Birth certificate in the case of an invalid identity document
  • Underage children: For the re-registration of underage children, single or unmarried parents must submit proof of custody and, if both parents have custody, a declaration of consent from the second custodian (including a copy of the identity card or passport for signature comparison).
  • If applicable, power of attorney to re-register the spouse and adult children
  • If applicable, registration certificate part I (or vehicle registration document and registration certificate) as well as the certificate of the still valid main inspection (original) to change the address in the vehicle documents

Document issue - without an appointment
